Although Mardan does not have a formal dramatic arts program, many
teachers incorporate drama into the curriculum. Students often
engage in role playing to gain other perspectives and explore
interpersonal skills. Stories and plays are frequently performed as
part of the dramatic experience in the classroom.
Our classes also make formal presentations of special projects they
have completed to parents and other students.
Many of these performances are captured on film and illustrate the
great strides that our students, who often struggle with social
skills and positive self expression, have made while attending
Mardan.
Summer Movie-Production Class
In the summer
session of 2008, our 6th/7th grade class teamed up with the
11th/12th grade class to participate in a movie production course.
Students learned all aspects of movie production, including
research, script writing, auditioning, acting, camera operations,
lighting, sound, special effects, and digital editing.
The course
ultimately culminated in the creation of a Star Wars fan film.

Star Wars: Dark Deception
Due to its
success, the Movie Production class was held for a second time
during the summer session of 2009. The course again focused on all
aspects of movie production but this time, incorporated a study of
the mystery genre of writing.
As part of
their research, students read classic mystery stories and analyzed
elements of past mystery movies. They also studied the Victorian era
of English and American history to develop a fitting setting for
their new film.
